Small Works 2013 Show and Sale Report from Len Haug

Dear PAS Member,

This year's show was one of the best, especially as measured by the variety and quality of art and artisan items on display, not to mention the very affordable prices offered by our exhibiting members. The Opening Reception on Friday evening was well attended in spite of the uncertainty of weather. Saturday and Sunday gallery hours brought in a steady flow of visitors.

I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped to make this event successful, including this year's co-coordinator, Karen Rossow, who also secured and donated the services of the string quartet whose music added so much to the opening reception. I would also like to recognize the following members:

Beth Mellor and Claire Golding for their help in communications; Judy Tyler for all of her efforts to promote and market the show; Diane Pedersen for lending us her display panels; Judy Dino, Joanne Quinn, and Jean Strock for their help in hanging the show; Dave and Rosella Stromberg for coordinating and overseeing the food and beverage table at the Opening Reception; and all the Officers, Board Members and Society Members who staffed this three-day event.

I would also like to thank our exhibiting members (including a number of new members) for their participation, with a special thanks to those members who created and donated pieces of their work to help fund our Society, including Sharon Bahosh, Jen Caswell, Bruce Dean, Judy Dino, Andrea Driscoll, Mary Dunn, Charles Gray, Mary Haggar, Kathy Hebert, David Hummon, Sharon Sjoblom Koski,Sau-Mei Leung, Debra Hughes Luoma, Lori MacDonald, Mary Anne Magiera, Beth Mellor, Priscilla Messinger, Jean Murphy, Paula Murphy, Diane Pedersen, Joanne Quinn, Janice Rayner, Lisa Regopoulos, Michael Rogan, Karen Rossow, Pam Short, Jean Strock, Mary Trostel, Judy Tyler, and Barry Van Dusen.

Besides enriching our community with this event, I am happy to report that we sold a great deal of holiday art and handcrafted gifts. In fact, this year sales exceeded all prior year results. Approximately 70% of the participating 50 artists sold at least one piece. We are very grateful for the turnout and support given to us by the public.

With the above said, I now officially close the books on yet another great holiday show. I look forward to next spring and our annual judged show in May. I now happily retreat into my own studio for a long winter's rest.

Regards,

Len Haug, PAS Exhibit Coordinator

2013 Hey Day Report from Len Haug

Hey Day was very successful in spite of the uncertainty of early morning weather. While the number of attendees may have been lower than last year, there was a good turnout. The use of two rooms in the Crocker House and the adjacent classroom (instead of the large barn) worked out really well and it seemed that throughout the day we had a steady flow of traffic moving in and out of all three "galleries."  We had over 25 participating artists and over 65 pieces of art on display, not counting the work on exhibit by our demonstrating artists (Andrea Driscoll, Pam Short, and Heather March). We sold over twelve pieces of art and were able, as a result, to also call this event a financially successful undertaking for some of our artists, for the Society, and for Mass Audubon (with whom we share the monies raised).

I would like to thank the following members for their assistance in making this event so successful, starting with Janice Rayner, who helped me throughout all phases of the event. I would also like to thank Diane Ulman Pedersen for the use of her panels that made it possible to exhibit all of the work, to Lou and Mary Trostel for their staffing of Gallery "3", to Judy Tyler for marketing and promoting the show, to Claire Golding and Beth Mellor for their communications support, and to Naoko Gomi for her help in accounting for all of the deposits and disbursements associated with the show.

Of course the show could never have taken place without the participation of our artists. Thanks to all of our artists (including new PAS members Sharon Koski, Debra Luoma, Nancy McBride, and Stephen Stimson). A special thanks to Jean Murphy who generously donated a painting titled "Birches of Princeton" with all proceeds benefiting the Princeton Arts Society. The raffle was limited to 25 tickets at $5.00 per chance. Jean also staffed the raffle table while promoting the upcoming Portrait Marathon.

Exhibiting and demonstrating artists included Bayda Asbridge, Bruce Dean, Judy Dino, Andrea Driscoll, Mary Dunn, Len Haug, Ann Howe, David Hummon, George Kelley, Naida Knox, Sharon Koski, David Lucht, Debra Luoma, Heather March, Nancy McBride, Lori MacDonald, Jean Murphy, James O'Rourke, Diane Pedersen, Linda Phelps, Joann Talbot Quinn, Janice Rayner, Barbara Roberts, Pam Short, Lauren and Stephen Stimson, Sid Solomon, Jean Strock, Judy Tyler, and Kathleen Vuona.

Finally, we are fortunate to have the support of the Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary and the Mass Audubon staff who values and supports our participation in this wonderful event and have done everything possible to help us put our best foot forward.

Thanks to all. Forgive me if I have inadvertently forgotten to give credit to any one else.

Until next year,

Len Haug

New Photography Exhibit: Mary Anne Magiera

Princeton Arts Society member Mary Anne Magiera of Charlton has a new exhibit of her photography at the Princeton Branch of the Barre Savings Bank and Princeton Town Hall.  Magiera is semi-retired from two distinct and rewarding careers; one in public service and the other in journalism, including as a reporter and columnist for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.  She has a BS in Journalism/Photography from Boston University and has been exhibiting her work for 35 years.  Her work is sold in several locations in New England and is included in private collections throughout the country.

The exhibit includes 27 photographs in both black and white and color. Magiera’s photographs share what we see along the country roads and city streets that we pass every day, every season, every year.  The public is invited to view the exhibit at the Princeton branch of the Barre Savings Bank and Princeton Town Hall (Bagg Hall) during their normal business hours through the end of September.  Artwork is available for purchase.  Artwork sales support local artists and Princeton Arts Society community events.   For more information, please email contact@princetonarts.org.

A Plug for Plein Air Painting

Dave Lucht has sent this message about the upcoming plein air painting
opportunity in Shrewsbury:

I'm writing to put in a plug for the plein air painting opportunity in
Shrewsbury on Sunday afternoon, June 9.  This historic site is very near my
home...I've long imagined painting some of the lovely scenes on the
property.  Unfortunately I have to be in NY that weekend and will miss the
chance to join in the fun, but I'm sure many PAS and AGS members will find
it to be an enjoyable afternoon.  Below are a few additional photographs of
the site which includes the family home and a giant yellow barn.  (Dean Park
also has a pond and you might find some interesting landscape scenes there
too).

Artemas Ward was the first Commander in Chief of revolutionary forces in
Massachusetts and soon after served as a major general under George
Washington. A Harvard grad, he also had a highly successful career in law,
the judiciary and politics. He was also Moderator of the church I attend,
the Congregational Church "on the green", founded in 1723. The Ward property
is now preserved as a museum by Harvard University.

Oh, and by the way, don't forget to check out the stone post near the Dean
Park entrance across the street from the Ward estate.  Listed in the
National Register of Historic Places, this is one of few surviving original
mileposts erected along the Boston Post Road circa 1757. The milepost system
was the brainchild of Benjamin Franklin when he was postmaster general. The
idea was to base postage charges on the parcel delivery distance... the
posts were helpful in consistently figuring postage charges. He also
invented a horse-drawn wagon "odometer" to travel along ahead of the post
planting crew to be sure they placed the posts in the right place (what a
guy!).  Below is a picture of the famous post.

Hope you have good weather!  Wish I could be there.

Dave
