Hey Day Show Report

WACHUSETT MEADOW WILDLIFE SANCTUARY HEY DAY ART BARN REPORT
From LEN HAUG

If there is such a thing as a perfect day, the October 6 Hey Day Event came very close to being just that – perfect!
The weather (except for some windy gusts) was great, and warmer than usual for this time of the year. Over 1,000 people came out to enjoy the weather, the sanctuary, the many activities, the great music, the food and beverages, and of course, the art.

In fact, Audubon has told us that the Art Barn has become a key component of the event! It was great to see so many, including families with children, enjoying the art and interacting with our Demonstrators.

Beyond the sheer pleasure of knowing that we added to the success of the day, it was also rewarding to see such brisk sales. In total $4,500 of art was sold in just 5 hours- which speaks to the quality of the art exhibited by both exhibitors and demonstrators. 2012 Hey Day art sales exceeded those for the past two seasons!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 26 artists who participated in the Exhibit and the 9 Demonstrators who gave of their time and talent to make this event so wonderful!

In addition, I would like to thank those who helped me before, during, or after the event, including Susan Ulrich, Mary and Lou Trostel, Claire Golding, Janice Rayner, Jean Murphy, Naoko Gomi, Judy Tyler, and Judy Dino.

Thanks also to the staff at Wachusett Meadow, the Wachusett Garden Club, and our jurors, Ron Wolanin and Karen Tucker. Congratulations to both adult and student winners of our first special theme judged show! Thanks also to plein air painter Michael Rogan, who was on site painting throughout the event.

To all on distribution, thanks again and please send any recommendations you may have on how we might further improve the art experience for both attendees and participants next year.

Until then,
Len Haug, Hey Day PAS Art Barn Coordinator

Hey Day: October 6, 2012

Visitors to the Art Barn at Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary were surrounded by nature-related artworks by over 35 artists from around the region, as well as demonstrations of various techniques and processes. In spite of a pesky breeze, it was a lovely day. Len Haug, Naoko Gomi, Jean Murphy, Janice Rayner, Mary and Lou Trostel, Susan Ulrich, and a host of other PAS members contributed to the event’s success.

Mason Gathering, October 14

Last Sunday afternoon, a crowd gathered in the camp room of Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary to hear reminiscences of the life and many talents of Fred Mason, a Princeton resident who was an illustrator, an author, and the designer of the renowned dioramas at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. After the storytelling, many attendees adjourned to the Crocker House to enjoy the display of Mason’s books and artwork, and to bid by silent auction on some of Mason’s prints, printed from his original copper plates. This event, and the exhibit, were the result of a joint effort by the Princeton Arts Society, the Princeton Historical Society, and MassAudubon. PAS members Jen Hilton and Mary Trostel (printing), and Susan Ulrich (matting and exhibit hanging) were key participants.

Quick Yard Sale Report from Claire Golding

In spite of mildly uncooperative weather, the PAS Yard Sale, part of the Princeton Townwide Yard Sale on Saturday, September 29, generated a very nice $223 for the Society—as Len pointed out, that’s the equivalent of about 8 new memberships! Many thanks to everyone who donated materials and supplies, and also to those who helped out in various ways: Jen Caswell, David Cruise, Dominic Golding, Naoko Gomi, Len Haug, Beth Mellor, Judy Tyler, and the Princeton Historical Society, who very kindly sent people our way from the gym. It was a fun time! We may do it again!
