9th Annual Community Arts Festival

March 13, 2014

Please join us as a participating artist at the Ninth Annual Community Arts Festival, Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Thomas Prince School in Princeton. We welcome all community artists: they set a great example for students of lifelong creativity and commitment to the arts. This year our theme is Nature, although artists need not bring work that relates to the theme.

We’ll provide table or floor space for whatever work you would like to display. Please plan to arrive by 4:30 and be available to talk about your work between 5:30 and 7:30 pm. You are also free to offer your work for sale if you like.

Award-winning Local Poet to Read

Poet and Princeton native Jamie Samdahl will read from her new manuscript, Learned Exile¸ on Sunday, January 19 at 2 pm in the Princeton Arts Society’s room in the Princeton Center, 18 Boylston Ave. Jamie is a junior at Smith College in Northampton, and has just returned from three months of study and travel in India. Her poems have been published in Smith’s literary magazine Labrys, as well as in the five-college literary journal Quick Brown Fox.  In the spring of 2013 Jamie was named winner of Smith College Art Museum’s Tryon Prize for Writing, as well as Mount Holyoke College’s 90^th annual Glascock Poetry Prize. The reading is made possible in part by a grant from the Princeton Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. All are welcome! Small Works 2013 Show and Sale Report from Len Haug

Dear PAS Member,

This year's show was one of the best, especially as measured by the variety and quality of art and artisan items on display, not to mention the very affordable prices offered by our exhibiting members. The Opening Reception on Friday evening was well attended in spite of the uncertainty of weather. Saturday and Sunday gallery hours brought in a steady flow of visitors.

I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped to make this event successful, including this year's co-coordinator, Karen Rossow, who also secured and donated the services of the string quartet whose music added so much to the opening reception. I would also like to recognize the following members:

Beth Mellor and Claire Golding for their help in communications; Judy Tyler for all of her efforts to promote and market the show; Diane Pedersen for lending us her display panels; Judy Dino, Joanne Quinn, and Jean Strock for their help in hanging the show; Dave and Rosella Stromberg for coordinating and overseeing the food and beverage table at the Opening Reception; and all the Officers, Board Members and Society Members who staffed this three-day event.

I would also like to thank our exhibiting members (including a number of new members) for their participation, with a special thanks to those members who created and donated pieces of their work to help fund our Society, including Sharon Bahosh, Jen Caswell, Bruce Dean, Judy Dino, Andrea Driscoll, Mary Dunn, Charles Gray, Mary Haggar, Kathy Hebert, David Hummon, Sharon Sjoblom Koski,Sau-Mei Leung, Debra Hughes Luoma, Lori MacDonald, Mary Anne Magiera, Beth Mellor, Priscilla Messinger, Jean Murphy, Paula Murphy, Diane Pedersen, Joanne Quinn, Janice Rayner, Lisa Regopoulos, Michael Rogan, Karen Rossow, Pam Short, Jean Strock, Mary Trostel, Judy Tyler, and Barry Van Dusen.

Besides enriching our community with this event, I am happy to report that we sold a great deal of holiday art and handcrafted gifts. In fact, this year sales exceeded all prior year results. Approximately 70% of the participating 50 artists sold at least one piece. We are very grateful for the turnout and support given to us by the public.

With the above said, I now officially close the books on yet another great holiday show. I look forward to next spring and our annual judged show in May. I now happily retreat into my own studio for a long winter's rest.

Poetry Reading at Small Works Show—please come!

Award-Winning Poet to Read in Princeton

Distinguished poet John Hodgen will give a reading of his work on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 2:30 pm at The Princeton Center, 18 Boylston Ave., Princeton, MA. The reading is offered by the Princeton Arts Society in conjunction with its annual Small Works Holiday Show and Sale. Hodgen, who teaches English and creative writing at Assumption College in Worcester, is the award-winning author of four volumes of poetry. Among other awards, he has won the Donald Hall Prize in Poetry, the Yankee Magazine Award for Poetry, the Bluestem Award, and the Balcones Poetry Prize.He lives in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. This event is made possible by a grant from the Princeton Cultural Council, a local agency funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Request for Proposals: Art at Worcester State

Sheehan Hall, a new dormitory currently under construction at WSU, has been allotted spaces (and money) for the installation of new art. Preference will be given to Worcester artists (teaming with one is permitted). The Worcester State University Art Committee, charged with the selection of the proposals, is calling for works that are either large-scale and permanently incorporated into the building's design, or for smaller works that are demountable and independent of the wall surface.

Each artist selected will enter into a contract with the Massachusetts State College Building Association, and shall be paid a commission of up to $5,000 if selected to produce and install their piece.
